WA6CGR microwave PLL
This PLL is well known and others have made improvements to it (VK5KK). The priciple is based on a dual modulus PLL but with a subtle difference. The PLL locks to a divided difference frequency rather than a divided osc freq. The advantage of this is a much finer control of frequency. This is of real benefit as the oscillator frequency is significantly multiplied for use in the microwave regions.
One of the disadvantages of the original circuit is the limited division ratios and also the use of decade dividers which may be difficult to get now. However in the intervening period our friends at Motorola have produced a useful PLL chip which has the advantage of increased division ratios and reduced chip count as well! The revised design is shown below and the PCB is the result of my recent acquisition of some Vutrax software for Schematic drawing and PCB layout.
